Pretty Is as Pretty Does
By Sara Valor
My family were very witty people, each unique in his or her own way of course. It is interesting when you get to thinking about the different sayings of others, especially family members. I remember one of my grandmothers, her name was Molly. Pretty name I think. However, at some of the most oddest times, she was well-known for saying, "Pretty is as Pretty does! I'm not sure exactly what she meant by that. However, I have always tried to Do Pretty things, so I'm hoping that means I am pretty.

Hi Nick, Thanks! Love the frog, what kinda frog is that?
Your grandmother was indeed a wise woman. This ancient saying relates more to the personality of the individual than to the physical appearance. In an age when smallpox had ravaged the features of many a person it was noted that a badly marked face did not mean that the person was also badly 'marked'. Indeed, it was noticed that those who had escaped the disease were often rather supercilious and condescending - hence - "Pretty is as pretty does" sometimes replaced with "By their actions you shall know them"
