Memories - 1st time Cooking

By Sara Valor

Memories are funny things, and some of the things in our memories are funny.

I remember the first time cooking something, I was about 13 or 14 years old at the time. We lived way out in the woods and my parents and siblings had all gone into town to get groceries for the month.

Sometime after they left, I got hungry and thought of what was there that I could fix to eat. I found rice, I had watched mother cook rice before. It did not look complicated.

I started the rice boiling, and then thought I need to add something to it. The only thing I found that I felt safe enough to add were prunes.

Yes, I know now, however at that time I used my imagination, I used the choices available to me with very little knowledge and absolutely no skill for cooking at that time.

Yes, you are right. Rice and prunes are not very tasty together as I prepared them.

I buried them together in the back yard before my family returned that day and I am happy to say although, I do like prunes from time to time and I have learned how to make perfect rice that I have never tried the recipe above ever again.

Loved it, I can just imagine... Not all home cooking creations are edible are they, especially at that age! I had to laugh - the thought of adding prunes to anything being SAFE! Well I suppose it is - as long as you don't eat more than about SIX!

lol "safe enough to add" meaning, something mother would not miss from the stock. I may have not known what I was doing, but I wasn't stupid either. :)

Evocative and charming. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Why thank you sir, I appreciate that. :)

This did make me recall a weekend at university, when there were only 2 of us in the halls of residence on a Sunday, and back then in the UK there were no shops of any kind open, and we were S-T-A-R-V-I-N-G!

My friend had some flour and a couple of eggs, ok to make some pancakes, and about the only thing I had in was a jar of Pickled Red Cabbage. Needless to say it tasted about as good as your rice and prunes - actually I am sure a lot worse. Thank goodness shops open all hours these days.

lol Poddy, I totally understand and I do think I may agree about the taste. However, I can tell you that adding salt and pepper to my recipe did nothing to enhance the flavors.
