How to Protect Your Children from Bad People while Shopping

By Sara Valor

How do you protect your children from bad people? This is a good subject and question.

How would I tell you to go about protecting children from bad people?

Well, having worked in retail, I'll say, you should always keep your eye on your kids. A store is brimming full of strangers. A stranger is a stranger.

Granted, most strangers are not bad people, and many of these types of strangers will help you protect or rescue your child from bad people.

However, you never really know whether you are unfortunate enough to be shopping in the presence of bad people until the unexpected happens to you and your child or someone close to you. Suffering and fatalities do happen just as well as missing children.

- If possible, leave your children in the security of your home with a responsible and trustworthy adult, while you go shopping. This will save you time as well as the worry for having to protect children from bad people while shopping.

If it so happens that you must take children with you, while shopping you need to consider this:

- Infants and toddlers should be fastened into the seat belt of the buggy or the baby carrier inside the buggy. Never ever leave an infant or toddler unattended or simply walk a step or two away from it. Your eyes should always have your infant or toddler within sight. If you have to look at things, lean to one side of the child and look at the item. Do not turn in any direction that does not allow you to easily focus on such children. * Small children as such are the easiest to swipe and change if that child is a target.

- Small children should ride inside the buggy as they are comfortable in size to do so. Small children should never ever be allowed to roam around unattended in stores. Stores are full of strangers. Some good people, some bad people. Keep small children close to you.

- Older children and teens should know about stranger danger and the things they can do to prevent things from happening as well as things to help protect their selves. Use your own judgment, teach them to help you shop; however, keep a watchful eye on them as well.

- Do not leave children of any age, but especially the very young in vehicles unattended. If and when you happen to do so, stay within sight of the vehicle and children. Make sure they understand not to open the doors and windows to strangers.

I do hope that helps.

The fact that 'stranger' rhymes with 'danger' seems to be a heaven sent opportunity for the terrorists among us. You know the ones - they hate everybody and will do anything to scare you.

I was appalled to hear my grandchildren singing a song about 'stranger danger' and I would love to know when it happened that I could be persecuted just for being unknown.

There is probably as much danger to children today as there has always been but instead of sensible precautions there now seems to be a need to scare parents witless and keep children awake at night with horror stories.

How sad that the vast majority of adults are branded bad people simply because it is fashionable. Fortunately children do not put 'my daddy is a stranger to some people' together with 'my daddy is a danger to some people'.

I do hope I have not offended you with a phrase. :)
I do understand what you mean.
However, things do happen, as things have always happened and most likely will continue to happen until one fine day...

However, in the mean time, it is wise for children to be educated about such things as best a parent can do.
Attending to children as I've tried to explain, while shopping is sound advice. I also added that not all strangers are dangers.

I actually believe there are more heroes and heroins amoung us.
:)
